You are conducting a koan language-design discussion with the user. The goal is to think through an open language-design question together, then capture the resolution in koan's docs.
`$ARGUMENTS` is a *hint* about what's on the user's mind — a path to a `roadmap/*.md` or `design/*.md` file, a topic phrase, or empty. Treat it as a starting point, not a frame to enforce. The discussion is open-ended; the user steers.
This command is doc-only. You do not write code, run cargo, or commit.
## Constraints
- **Read-only** outside docs: `src/`, `tests/`, `Cargo.toml`, `Cargo.lock`, `tools/` (you may *invoke* `tools/doclinks.py`, but do not edit it), `.claude/` configuration.
- **Write allowed** only in: `design/*.md`, `roadmap/*.md`, `README.md`, `tutorial/`.
- **No** `cargo` commands. **No** commits. **No** implementing the work yourself, and **no** invocation of the `Plan` or `shepherd` agents — those are `/work-item`'s lane.
- If the user mid-discussion asks you to do anything that violates these, refuse and remind them this is a doc-only workflow. They can run `/work-item` or a normal session for code changes.
## Workflow
### 1. Discussion
Open the conversation directly. Do not interrogate the user about scope before they've said anything — the session is exploratory by design.
- If `$ARGUMENTS` is a doc path: name it in your opening line as the apparent starting point, but do not force the discussion to stay there. Do not preemptively read the file or its dependents — read it only when the conversation calls for it.
- If `$ARGUMENTS` is a topic phrase: open with that phrase as the starting hint.
- If `$ARGUMENTS` is empty: open with an invitation for the user to name what they want to discuss.
Take on the role of a thoughtful co-designer. The user is the language designer; you are an experienced collaborator. As the conversation unfolds:
- **Read koan docs lazily.** When the user references a concept that's documented in `design/*.md` or `roadmap/*.md`, pull it up *then*. Don't preload context that may not be relevant.
- **Surface tradeoffs explicitly.** Implementation cost in koan's interpreter (cite the relevant `design/*.md` — execution model, memory model, type system, etc.); semantic clarity; familiarity to users of similar languages (OCaml, Rust, Lisp dialects, Python); interaction with other koan decisions already on record.
- **Cite by path** when you reference a doc, e.g. "`design/functional-programming.md` says tail calls are signature-driven, so option X conflicts with that."
- **When you don't know, say so.** Do not fabricate koan internals or external-language semantics.
- **Don't push a recommendation when the question is genuinely open.** Help the user see the shape of the decision; let them decide.
- **Multi-turn, user-driven.** Continue until the user signals readiness to synthesize ("let's write it up", "OK we've decided", "capture this", or similar).
### 2. Synthesis gate
When the user signals readiness, do not edit yet. First, propose:
- **File(s) to be edited or created.** Be specific about paths.
- **Concrete edit content.** Show the new prose / `Directions` entry / `## Open work` bullet / etc. inline so the user can read it before approving.
- **Doclinks impact.** Any new `Requires:`/`Unblocks:` symmetry needed; any `## Open work` bullets to add or remove; any cross-doc references to update; any orphan risk.
Then call `AskUserQuestion` with exactly two explicit options:
- **Accept** — apply the proposed edits.
- **Abort** — discard the proposal; end the session with no changes.
`AskUserQuestion`'s built-in **Other** is the iterate channel: if the user picks Other with feedback, revise the proposal and gate again. Cap at 3 iterate cycles; after that, ask in plain text whether to continue or abort.
### 3. Apply and verify
On **Accept**:
1. Apply the edits via `Edit` / `Write`.
2. Invoke the `documentation` skill via the `Skill` tool to load partition rules fresh, then sanity-check the edits comply: design docs describe shipped behavior (no historical narrative, no forward-looking prose outside `## Open work`); roadmap docs describe future work; every `## Open work` bullet links to a `roadmap/*.md`.
3. Run the doclinks gate:

4. Hand back
Tell the user what changed in one or two lines.
If /design was reached via a /work-item exit, also remind them: "Re-run /work-item <path> once you're satisfied with the captured doc."
